Single-car crash kills man on Big Isle
A man died late Friday night after a single vehicle crash in the Volcano area of the Big Island, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.
Firefighters arrived at the intersection of Hawaii Belt Road and Glenwood Road at 10:45 p.m. to find a male driver pinned in the car. He was dead on arrival, officials said today. They did not identify him or give his age.
The car, a midsize vehicle, had extensive front end damage and debris was scattered across the road, according to firefighters.
Hawaii Belt Road, or Highway 11, was closed while police investigated the crash.
The driver was Hilo-bound, officials said.
Man with criminal record skips food bill
A 37-year-old Waialae Iki man was arrested Saturday after he was unable to pay for his meal in Waikiki, police said.
Police were called at about 9:15 p.m. Friday after the man’s failure to pay. Upon investigating, officers learned the man met the criteria for felony habitual property crime, defined as a property crime committed by a person who has at least three other property crime convictions within the past five years.
The man was arrested at 12:10 a.m. on Kalia Road.
Hikers safe after overnight stay on trail
A pair of hikers from Lahaina emerged safely from the Commando Trail on Saturday after spending a cold, rainy night on the Kailua, Maui, trail.
The hikers, a man and woman, both 24, set out on the trail on Friday. The man hiked out to the highway around 11 p.m. to call his landlord and inform him that the woman was unable to make it out and that they would both spend the night on the trail.
The landlord reported the couple missing on Saturday morning.
Maui firefighters initiated a search, which was canceled when the couple arrived safely at their car, where a firefighter had been posted, around 9 a.m.
No injuries were reported.
Alleged moped getaway driver arrested
Police arrested a 24-year-old Wahiawa man who was the alleged getaway driver of a stolen moped for another man who allegedly stole items from a North Shore beach Friday.
Police said the suspect reportedly took the items from a 44-year-old man and a 2-1/2-year-old boy and fled on the moped driven by the 24-year-old at 8:30 a.m.
When police arrived, the 24-year-old was the only suspect found and was in possession of personal, confidential information, police said.
Police arrested him at 9 a.m. on suspicion of second-degree theft, unauthorized possession of a propelled vehicle and unauthorized control of personal, confidential information.
Man nabbed following robbery of teen
Police arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly robbing a 15-year-old boy Friday in Ewa Beach.
Police said the man used physical force to take the boy’s property at 3:23 p.m.
Police found the man about a half hour later and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
Woman found floating off Maui beach
A 59-year-old Wailea woman was found Friday floating unresponsive in waters off Kamaole Beach Park, the Maui Fire Department said in a news release.
Firefighters arrived at 12:09 p.m. and assisted lifeguards with the woman, who had been brought to shore by beachgoers.
The woman was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
There were no witnesses to the incident, the Fire Department said.
