The Hawaii State Energy Office said Tuesday it has been selected to receive a $225,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to create a data visualization tool meant to help the state achieve its goal of having 100 percent of electrical generation from renewable resources by 2045.
The state said the tool is an array of multiple screens that show data points of the energy resources connected to Hawaii’s power grid.
The state energy office applied for the grant under the DOE’s State Energy Program to develop the array, called Hawaii Advanced Visualization Environment Nexus, or HAVEN. The state said the platform will help clarify complex energy problems related to environmental, reliability, resiliency and economic goals.
“It is to help make policy decisions,” said Alan Yonan, communications officer for the state Energy Office. “If you were able to take all of that information and display it on a massive screen, it would help you understand the trade-offs between having so much wind, so much solar and so much batteries.”
The University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Laboratory for Advanced Visualization &Applications and the Hawaiian Electric Cos. are working to put together a website to be used in conjunction with the screens.
