Hawaii County police Tuesday identified the 18-year-old Mountain View man who died Friday after his car apparently hit a wall while speeding on Highway 11.
The driver, Lucas Derego, who was the sole occupant, was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, police said.
Puna police found a Chevrolet two-door sedan with severe damage in a ditch off Highway 11 near North Glenwood Road at 10:28 p.m. Friday.
Police said the car had been traveling toward Hilo on Highway 11 and apparently struck a rock retaining wall.
Derego was identified through fingerprints.
Police said speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
Water agency set to relocate to new building
The Kauai Department of Water’s administrative, billing and engineering services will operate from its new administration building in Lihue starting Tuesday.
The Water Department’s new administration building will hold onto the same phone numbers, and the same addresses — 4398 Pua Loke St. and P.O. Box 1706, Lihue, HI 96766. The building is about 500 feet west of the Water Department’s original office. There will be signs posted in the area to advise the public about the operational changes.
In addition, a drive-thru drop box for customer payments will be set up in the new parking lot.
