The crashes of a red Kia minivan and Jeep SUV along the same stretch of Kauai coastline are unrelated, Kauai County police said Sunday.
At about 7 a.m. Saturday, police were notified about a vehicle that drove off Kuhio Highway in Waikoko, on the North Shore.
Police discovered that a Kia minivan had veered off the northbound lane and landed on a utility pole guide wire, which kept the vehicle from driving off the cliff.
Once on scene, police also located a Jeep SUV that appeared to have driven off the highway and landed on the rocky shoreline below, roughly 200 yards from the Kia crash site.
There were no occupants in the Jeep, but the owner later made contact with police. No injuries were reported and no property damage was caused by the Jeep’s crash.
There were also no occupants in the Kia when police responded.
However, the driver was later located and cited for leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in property damage and for not having insurance.
Responding officers closed the highway in both directions at about 8 a.m. to allow a crew from Kauai Island Utility Cooperative to repair a downed power line caused by the crash.
The highway was reopened at about 10:40 a.m. after the vehicles were towed.
