The Chaminade women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches in San Francisco on Friday. The Silverswords defeated host San Francisco State 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23, but fell to Concordia Oregon 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-20. Daisia LaBrie posted a team-high 29 kills in the doubleheader, with a career-high 19 kills against the Gators (1-5). Kasse-Ann Kiriu-Dela Cruz led the Silverswords (6-2) with 14 digs in the nightcap against the Cavaliers (2-3).
>> Pomai Recca put down a match-high 23 kills and picked up 20 digs as the Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team edged the University of Alaska 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9 on Friday in Turlock, Calif. The Sharks bounced back from a 25-19, 25-14, 25-23 loss to Western Oregon earlier that afternoon. Amanda Acosta led HPU (4-4) with 26 digs in the win over the Nanooks (1-5), while Perla Escobar finished with nine kills in the loss to the Wolves (1-4).
>> The BYU-Hawaii women’s volleyball team struggled in San Diego, dropping six consecutive sets at the D-II West Region Volleyball Showcase on Friday. The Seasiders fell to Central Washington 25-15, 25-19, 25-23 and lost to Northwest Nazarene University 25-15, 25-14, 25-19. Brittany Waite led BYUH (2-6) with 10 kills and hit .625 against the Wildcats (2-4). Sinamoni Tonga posted 10 kills and nine digs in the loss to the undefeated Crusaders (6-0).
>> The Hawaii Hilo women’s volleyball team picked up a pair of victories on Friday in Carson, Calif. Marley Strand-Nicolaisen recorded 20 kills and 12 digs as the Vulcans defeated Montana St.-Billings 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19. Mina Grant posted a match-high 25 digs against the Yellowjackets (1-5). The Vulcans (2-2) rallied in the nightcap to beat Seattle Pacific 27-25, 25-22, 18-25, 22-25, 15-12. Strand-Nicolaisen added 25 more kills and 18 digs against the Falcons (3-4). Sienna Davis finished with 53 assists in the five-set thriller.
Asing, Zietz fall in Hurley Pro
Keanu Asing fell to Brazil’s Italo Ferreira by a score of 16.10 to 11.97 in the second round of the Hurley Pro on Friday in San Clemente, Calif. Sebastian Zietz also fell to Brazilian Jadson Andre 14.70 to 12.73. John John Florence is the lone Hawaii surfer left in the competition. He will take on Brett Simpson in the third round.
Carissa Moore won her heat with a score of 13.00 in the third round of the Swatch Women’s Pro on Friday also at Lower Trestles. Moore automatically advances to the quarterfinals after clinching her heat.
Tatiana Weston-Webb and Malia Manuel placed second in their respective heats, while Coco Ho finished third in her heat. All three surfers advance to the fourth round.
