A 49-year-old Waianae man died and a 23-year-old man from Kaneohe was arrested following an early morning traffic collision in Nanakuli on Saturday.
According to police, the vehicle driven by the 49-year-old man was making a left turn from Nanakuli Avenue onto Farrington Highway when it was struck by the car driven by the younger man.
The older man suffered severe head and internal injuries and was transported in critical condition to an area hospital, where he later died.
The other driver was uninjured; a 25-year-old female passenger in the car complained of abdominal pain and was taken to the hospital in good condition.
Police found alcoholic beverages in the younger man’s vehicle and arrested the driver on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be factors on the part of the suspect.
This was the 40th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 34 at the same point last year.
