On a recent trip to Liliha Bakery, I came across a new item: Poi Mochi Donuts. This pretty dessert — it looks like a flower — is softer than your typical glazed doughnut and a little denser, yet still appealingly light with a nice chew. The glaze lends a perfect sweetness. The doughnuts are $1.95 apiece. I love it when I discover something so delicious.

Imu benefit helps Kailua teams
Make plans for Thanksgiving now and you can have your turkey cooked for you with a guarantee that it will taste really, really good. That’s thanks to Kailua High School Athletic Program’s annual fundraising imu, in which faculty, staff, students and alumni come together to run an imu for the paying public.
Food goes into the underground oven on Nov. 23, emerging the next morning steamed full of luau flavor.
Cost is $25 per large aluminum tray. Food — such as whole turkeys, roasts or pork butt, sweet potatoes, taro or luau leaves — must be thawed, seasoned and well-wrapped in foil. Weight limit per tray is 25 pounds.
Reservations are due by Nov. 10 (though space will probably be sold out by the end of October); the first 400 orders will be honored. Make checks payable to Kailua High School and send to the school, 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua 96734. Write “Attention IMU” in the lower left of the envelope. Include your name, telephone number and a self-addressed, stamped envelope so a confirmation ticket can be sent to you. Provide email address to be notified about future imu.
Call athletic director Ramona Takahashi at 266-7910 or Kai Hovey at 391-8275.

Sponge brings smile to chores
I HATE washing dishes, but it helps that my sponge smiles at me.
I am a devotee of the Scrub Daddy, a smiley-face scrubber that doesn’t scratch my nonstick pans but does clean stuck-on grime. And because it’s more porous than a regular sponge, it doesn’t hang onto little bits of grunge. Being round, it fits nicely into jars and such, and the eyes and mouth can be used to swipe utensils clean.
The Scrub Daddy is among the most successful products to be launched through ABC’s reality show, “Shark Tank,” in which citizen inventors pitch their products to investors. Entrepreneur Aaron Krause has made millions since his 2012 “Shark Tank” appearance.
The sponge is available at discount stores and through online sources. I get mine at Bed Bath & Beyond for $3.99 each.
