A state contractor has begun work on constructing a steel vehicular bridge across Keahua Stream on Kauai.
Mocon Corp. is installing the 110-foot bridge and an adjacent pedestrian walkway at the end of Kuamoo Road at Keahua Arboretum in the Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources Kauai Division of Forestry and Wildlife said in a news release the contractor will excavate, grade and pave a parking lot with asphalt for motorists. Builders will use a smaller parking lot during the project.
Construction is slated to be completed by early 2017, weather permitting. Project costs are estimated at $2.5 million.
Temporary road closures may occur during bridge construction.

Grease fire hits Hilo restaurant, causing damage
Hawaii island firefighters extinguished a restaurant fire in Hilo on Tuesday that caused about $120,000 in damage.
Twenty-two firefighters responded at about 8:45 a.m. to Ling’s Chop Suey House, 2100 Kanoelehua Ave., and found extensive smoke coming from the exhaust stack above the kitchen, firefighters said.
Firefighters put out the flames with a chemical fire extinguisher, aided by the kitchen’s sprinkler system. Firefighters contained the fire to the interior of the gas range.
A grease buildup on and within the gas range caused the fire, firefighters said.
