The Sharing Kimono Culture Project will be hosting a free workshop from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday presenting the history and cultural significance of the yukata, or summer kimono, followed by the opportunity to try on 50 different yukatas. The event will take place at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in Miller Hall, room 112, 2525 Campus Road, next to the Art Building.
Prom dress giveaway and sale Sept. 24
The next Bella Project dress giveaway will take place 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 24 in Central Union Church’s Parish Hall.
The event gives high school girls the opportunity to select a dress, pair of shoes, accessories and makeup to wear while attending the prom.
To participate, complete an online registration form at 2016bellaprojectboutique.eventbrite.com to secure an appointment time. Appointments will be confirmed via email.
For the first time, the Bella Project will also host an inventory reduction sale following the giveaway, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Dresses will go for $35 each. Admission is free. Cash and credit cards will be accepted. Proceeds from sales will go toward purchasing items for future giveaways. Register online for a sale appointment time at the site above. Walk-ins will be taken after those with an appointment for both events. Central Union Church is at 1660 S. Beretania St.
Nui Mono sale features local designers
Nui Mono and Girlfriends — a group of designers and artists affiliated with the boutique — are hosting a pre-Christmas sale for holiday early birds from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 24 at Palolo Hongwanji, 1641 Palolo Ave.
Nui Mono owner Lue Zimmelman will show her Water Lily line of clothing, joined by the Girlfriends: Wendy Kim Messier, Kim Kono, Cora Yee, Esther Nowell, Debbie Kaneshiro, Laurie Ito (Teru), Lisa Wiemken (Pitacus), Suzi Iizaki (Melons), Irene Kawaguchi (Wabi Sabi) and Sherrie Rupert (Why Not Bead).
Their creations include hand-sewn, tie-dye and patchwork-print clothing and purses, and decorative mini plants by Momo Terrascapes. Pitacus will also offer fabric remnants.
There will also be a Palolo Hongwanji Ladies Club rummage sale table and a Giving Back Corner by cultural club Hui o Laulima, donating proceeds from sales of its award-winning cookbook, handmade gifts and treats to Okinawan causes. There will be free parking.
