Police opened an attempted murder investigation after two men were shot at while trying to recover their stolen vehicle early Tuesday morning in Manoa.
No injuries were reported, although several shots were fired during the incident that was reported at 12:30 a.m. on Metcalf Street.
Police said two men saw their stolen vehicle and confronted a suspect who fired shots at them and fled.
The case was classified as a first-degree attempted murder because there were two victims.
Metcalf Street resident Pete Ramos said he was awakened by the sound of three gunshots and a car speeding away and initially thought it was a car backfiring.
Ramos said he saw police arrive a little later and realized it may have been gunshots.
About 5 a.m., the University of Hawaii Department of Public Safety emailed students about the near-campus shooting at Metcalf and Hunnewell streets, saying the suspect was last seen fleeing in a vehicle heading south on University Avenue.
Multiple vehicles were seen leaving the scene, and the suspect fled in one of those vehicles, the email said.
Public Safety officials described the man as 5 feet 6 inches tall, 130 to 140 pounds with a slim build and short, spiky hair. He has brown eyes, a goatee, a tattoo on his stomach and was wearing light-colored shorts and a gray hoodie.
