Starbucks is pushing beyond its coffee house roots with the launch of Hawaii’s first Starbucks Evenings in the Ala Moana Hotel lobby.
Customers can order from a selection of small plates, wine and beer from 2 to 9:30 p.m., filling a void toward the end of the day, when people tend to be easing off caffeine.
Wines available by glass or bottle range from California reds and whites, to malbec and prosecco.
Dishes for those who want to avoid the usual bar scene include heat-and-eat-caliber meatballs with tomato sauce ($4.95), truffle macaroni and cheese ($5.95) and artisanal flatbreads ($6.95).
These aren’t exactly destination- caliber eats, but a chicken sausage and mushroom flatbread is plenty tasty, as are decadent sweet-and-savory bacon-wrapped dates ($4.95 for two).
Starbucks’ usual premade sandwiches, salads and pastries are also available, but the new additions are welcome.
