Meetings target sex trafficking

Prosecutors from eight countries and 13 states and the District of Columbia are convening this week in Waikiki to discuss solutions to sex trafficking.

City Prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro, City Council Chairman Ernie Martin and the National District Attorneys Association are sponsoring the event, running Wednesday through Friday.

New York County District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and Kaneshiro will serve as event co-chairmen.

“As prosecutors, we recognize that sex trafficking is a global evil and that it falls upon us to bring traffickers to justice,” Kaneshiro said in a news release. “It is my hope that this gathering will result in an exchange of ideas and strategies, the forging of working relationships and the start of a true fellowship based on a common goal that transcends nationality.”

The sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel’s Molokai Ballroom.

Other than the opening of the event, where the media will be allowed in, the daily sessions will be restricted to participants.

Michael Ramos Martin, district attorney of San Bernardino County, Calif., and president of the National District Attorneys Association; Vance; Kaneshiro; and Martin will provide opening remarks.

Prosecutors are arriving for the meeting from Canada, China, Japan, Palau, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

American prosecutors from Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Virginia, Washington and Washington, D.C., will participate.

At some level it is a supply and demand issue …

Trafficking in human labor.. Hawaii Revised Statues 707-781 Human Labor Trafficking. There are reported documented cases of labor trafficking. Prison boats reported in you own paper (Star-Advertiser). Sex and Labor trafficking are both considered to be crimes against humanity by the United Nations. Funny thing, I could be wrong but Hawaii was the last State in the Union to make these criminal violations. There have been similar meeting with Flo Nakauni (United States Attorney), A represented from Kaneshiro’s Office ( a DUI Chronic that was terminated), Ed Kubo (Judge), Hawaii State Attorney General Loui and others in 2014 at the Mililani Hongwanji Temple. This meeting was hosted by Rene Mansho and the Optimist Club.. Worthless expenditure of time and money. Although, a trip to Hawaii is always a nice thing. My apologies for being so cynical.

Agree, rhetoric as such “transcends nationality” has been oft repeated and yet sex trafficking still persist. Sitting on one’s behind and wishing will not solve the issues. Even direct enforcement has little affect on sex trafficking.

Why weren’t Bill Clinton and Anthony Weiner invited as guest speakers to this conference? They’re both subject matter experts!

  4. WizardOfMoa says:

Efforts to eradicate the global evil of sex trafficking are not waste of time and money. It’s saving our world from people exploiting human beings for financial greed. These people are the scums of the earth. Obliterating them from our societies completely by any permanent means should be first and foremost by the whole world!
