A commuter airport for Oahu’s “second city” is an idea whose time has not quite come but very well may be around the corner.
In the meantime, Mokulele Airlines has had to shelve its dream of long-term flight operations out of Kalaeloa Airport. The carrier was losing money persistently on its four daily flights in its nine-seater planes, linking Oahu with Molokai.
Apparently, there just wasn’t the demand for those connections. Or, if there were, some of the passengers never made it to the plane.
Perhaps if someone improves the signage — we’ve heard from folks unable to find the airport — business will improve enough to bring the service back. Or perhaps we just have to wait for Kapolei and Kalaeloa to morph into an actual second city. Time will tell.
‘Wonder Blunder’ still in the courts
For University of Hawaii officials, the embarrassment and tumult of the “Wonder Blunder” is a closed chapter in the school’s history. Or is it?
It seems like so long ago that the UH Athletics Department got scammed into paying $200,000 for a fundraising concert, allegedly to star Stevie Wonder — but alas, the 2012 event was never authorized. Four years later, the alleged scammer has yet to stand trial.
The case resurfaced Tuesday, when suspect Marc Hubbard was expected to change his “not guilty” plea on a wire charge, then apparently canceled the plea change. A pretrial conference is scheduled for next week.
