Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has ranked the 2017 UH baseball recruiting class No. 37 in the nation.
The Rainbow Warriors welcome 20 newcomers this season with fall practice beginning Tuesday at Les Murakami Stadium.
UH’s class was ranked third in the Big West and 11th among teams in the West region, trailing UC Santa Barbara (ninth) and Cal State Fullerton (21st).
UH also returns eight of its top 10 hitters from last season and No. 1 starter Brendan Hornung, who went 4-7 with a 3.11 ERA and a team-high 74 strikeouts in 101 1/3 innings.
HPU men’s golf finishes 13th
The Hawaii Pacific men’s golf team posted a final round 296 to finish in a tie for 13th with Dixie State at the Western Washington Invitational at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club in Bellingham, Wash.
HPU finished the tournament with a composite score of 900 in the three-day tournament.
Masato Yoshitsugu and Nont Panayanggool each put up strong performances on Tuesday for HPU. Yoshitsugu shot a 1-under par 71, while Panayanggool posted a 1-over 73. Individually, they tied for 37th overall, with scores of 6-over 222.
British Colombia won the overall team title, with a final team score of 6-under 858, two shots ahead of second-place Chico State. Simon Fraser’s Chris Crisologo won the individual title, shooting a 1-over 73 to finish one shot ahead of Academy of Art’s Oskar Frick, British Colombia’s Andrew Harrison, and Western Washington’s Brett Johnson and Jeffrey Marcum.
The Sharks will conclude the season with a dual match against Chaminade in October, with details still to be announced.
