Utah setter Bailey Choy, who graduated from ‘Iolani in June, was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Choy played a big part in two five-set victories by the Utes to open conference play last week.
She finished with 39 assists and 17 digs in a win at then-No. 16 Colorado on Wednesday and added 40 assists with a career-high 18 digs in a win over Arizona State at home on Saturday.
Choy averaged 7.9 assists and 3.5 digs per set over the two matches and added a career-best four kills against the Sun Devils.
Choy is the first Utah volleyball player to earn freshman weekly honors since Adora Anae (Kahuku) in 2014.
Utah (11-2, 2-0) debuted in the AVCA rankings at No. 25 this week and hosts No. 12 UCLA on Friday and No. 23 USC on Saturday.
Kan shares SEC weekly honor
Missouri outside hitter Carly Kan, a 2013 Punahou graduate, was named the SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Kan, who has earned five SEC weekly honors in her career, posted two double-doubles with 10 kills and 14 digs in a sweep of South Carolina and 12 kills and 10 digs in another sweep of Ole Miss.
Kan hit a season-high .522 against the Rebels and had only one error over two matches.
The Tigers (11-3, 2-0) have won six in a row heading into road matches at Arkansas on Friday and LSU on Sunday.
Medios-Simon’s hat trick earns award
New York University’s Tristan Medios-Simon, a 2013 ‘Iolani alumnus, was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week in men’s soccer on Monday.
Medios-Simon scored all three goals for the Violets in a 3-3 draw against New Jersey City University on Wednesday.
In seven games this season, Medios-Simon leads NYU with five goals scored heading into Tuesday night’s game against Drew University.
Medios-Simon played two seasons at Seattle University before transferring to NYU in the spring of 2015. He was the ILH offensive player of the year as a senior in high school for the Raiders.
