Question: Please advise if there is a schedule of recurring paper shredding and electronic disposal, which is free and open to the public? If a schedule can be provided it will help the public where they can be prepared and add to their schedule. I am aware that the Better Business Bureau Hawaii has an annual shredding in October. Is there a schedule for calendar year 2017?
Answer: On-site document-shredding events often are held separately from electronics recycling drop-off events, so we’ll address this query as two questions.
The BBB’s Secure Your ID Day is held annually on the third Saturday of October and the AARP’s Shred Fest is held every spring, usually in April. In addition, the Kokua Hawaii Foundation organizes events on numerous Saturdays throughout the year that allow the public to drop off documents in locked bins for shredding later off site (details on the schedule below).
The exact date for the 2017 AARP Shred Fest has not been set, according to the local and national AARP calendars we checked, but the BBB event is right around the corner. Here are the specifics:
On Oct. 15 from 8 to 11 a.m., free, secure document shredding will be offered at four locations on three islands. Participants must sign a release form certifying that they own the documents they are destroying. To save time in the car line, download, print and sign the form ahead of time at 808ne.ws/accessrelease. These events are usually crowded, so please be patient and drive with aloha.
Locations:
>> McKinley High School: 1039 S. King St., Honolulu (entrance off Pensacola Street)
>> Access Information Management: 98-736 Moanalua Loop, Aiea
>> Access Information Management: 821 Eha St., Wailuku, Maui
>> Access Information Management: 73-4164 Huli Koa Drive, Kailua-Kona

We’ll publish information about AARP’s Shred Fest when it becomes available. Other groups also sponsor on-site shredding events from time to time, which Kokua Line is happy to publicize.
As for electronics: There are many convenient, free opportunities to properly dispose of items such as old desktop and laptop computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, cellphones and other electronic devices.
The city’s Department of Environmental Services posts a calendar of e-waste recycling events on Oahu at 808ne.ws/ewastecal.
The recurring Going Green and Aloha Aina recycling campaigns are two popular options, collecting electronics and other recyclable items at various Oahu locations. The Environmental Services website listed above has links to the Going Green calendar through 2016 and to the Aloha Aina schedule through May 2017.
As for upcoming events: Going Green will be collecting e-waste and other recyclable items Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pearl Hawaii Federal Credit Union, 94-449 Ukee St., and on Oct. 8 at Kaimuki High School, 2705 Kaimuki Ave. Neither event accepts paper.
Aloha Aina will collect electronics and other items (including documents for shredding) on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at Kahuku Elementary School, 56-170 Pualalea St. Electronics accepted include computers, TVs, laptops, printer cartridges, cellphones, cameras and video game systems. As for paperwork, “confidential documents will be collected in locked bins by Goodwill Hawaii and shredded securely at their headquarters at Mapunapuna,” according to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation’s website. To the person/persons who found the Long Drugs package containing my medical purchases Sunday at the Manoa Marketplace and turned it in to the store: I recovered it Monday intact. Thank you for your honesty. You saved an old senior $60. God bless you. — J.D.
