Kamehameha fended off a tough challenge from ‘Iolani for a 21-16 victory in the nightcap at Aloha Stadium on Friday night.
The Raiders (3-5, 0-5) held a 10-7 halftime lead before the Warriors (3-4, 2-3) took control in the second half of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I game.
Kanoa Shannon’s 35-yard touchdown run with 7:01 left in the third quarter put Kamehameha up for good, 14-10.
Later in the quarter, a fumble recovery by the Warriors’ Hoku Arias led to an early fourth-quarter Warriors touchdown. This time, Boogie Yam tossed a 20-yard scoring pass to Jaykob Cabunoc for the 21-10 bulge.
‘Iolani didn’t give up and used the two-minute drill to get its final touchdown with four seconds left on the clock. Tai-John Mizutani hit Justin Genovia over the middle and Genovia bulled through a few tacklers inside the 5 to get into the end zone. The Raiders tried for 2 points, but the conversion pass fell incomplete. The ensuing onside kick was covered by Kamehameha.
Shannon rushed for 94 yards on 17 carries for the Warriors and Yam passed for 234.
Mizutani passed for 240 yards in the loss.
