Washington Middle School Principal Michael Harano was recognized at a luncheon Sunday as Hawaii’s 2017 National Distinguished Principal.

He was selected by the Hawaii Association of Secondary School Administrators to represent the state. The luncheon at the Hale Koa Hotel kicked off National Principals Month, which focuses on the dedication and impact of school leaders. The National Principal of the Year for 2017 will be announced later this month.

“Principal Harano understands the challenges that are unique to middle school students — and he embraces them!” said state Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi. “His approach to ensuring that the needs of his students are met while also providing additional supports and activities has earned him respect by his staff and students. This recognition is well deserved and we look forward to his continued impact on education.”

The state winners are selected based on leadership skills, student learning, school demographics, professional training and recommendations from students, teachers, staff and Department of Education leaders.

Harano, who has been principal for 15 years at Washington Middle School, recently joined principals from the 49 other states at the National Principal of the Year Institute in Washington, D.C.

He said his philosophy focuses on “a kinder and gentler learning environment.”
