Washington senior linebacker Psalm Wooching, a 2012 graduate of Kealakehe High School, was named the Pac-12 defensive player of the week on Monday after he was named the Walter Camp national player of the week on Sunday.
Wooching had three of Washington’s eight sacks and forced a fumble in a 44-6 win over then-No. 7 Stanford last Friday.
The Huskies jumped five spots to No. 5 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, earning their highest ranking since the end of the 2000 season, when they beat Purdue in the Rose Bowl.
Wooching finished with six total tackles against the Cardinal.
“It’s really good to see Psalm kind of come out of, I don’t want to say, nowhere, but he’s been here a long time,” UW coach Chris Petersen said Monday during a press conference. “He’s a fifth-year guy, plays with a high motor and gives great effort. He’s made plays, but certainly to have it all come together in a game like that was really good for him.”
Navarro nabs NWC weekly honor
Lewis & Clark senior Alexe Navarro, a 2013 Mid-Pacific alumna, was named the Northwest Conference student-athlete of the week on defense for the Pioneers on Tuesday.
Navarro, who was the NWC libero of the year as a junior, averaged 6.14 digs per set against Linfield (Ore.) and Willamette (Ore.) last weekend.
She had 16 digs in a sweep of the Wildcats on Friday and added 27 digs in a four-set win over the Bearcats on Saturday.
She also totaled eight assists.
Lewis & Clark is 3-3 in conference play heading into matches against Whitworth (Wash.) on Friday and Whitman (Wash.) on Saturday.
