Oahu landlords have housed some 860 homeless military veterans in the past 18 months under the city’s ambitious “Housing First” program, and many of those landlords received praise and thanks during a “Heroes Housing Heroes” ceremony at the city’s Mission Memorial Auditorium Tuesday.
Meanwhile, social workers have identified 93 more vets on the island who need shelter. Each has access to federal housing vouchers to pay for housing, but needs a landlord to accept them.
So here’s to more landlords opening their units and hearts to homeless veterans. If you can help, call 768-4675.
These clowns are giving clowns a bad name
What a shame that an outstanding, philanthropic citizen such as Ronald McDonald would feel compelled to lower his public profile to avoid social harassment. But sightings of “creepy clowns” have been reported nationwide and even abroad, scaring the bejeebers out of some people. For professional clowns who entertain children at parties or in hospitals, it’s been an awkward time. Trying to help out, a woman in Tuscon, Ariz., is staging a “Clown Lives Matter” rally on Oct. 15. Ronald McDonald, figurehead for both McDonald’s Restaurants and the charitable Ronald McDonald Houses worldwide, probably appreciates the gesture.
