A triathlon that begins
at Ala Moana Regional Park and ends at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe will prompt several road closures this morning.
Traffic will be affected from 6 to 11 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.
Hundreds of runners and bicyclists are expected to take part in the Hawaii Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation’s Race to the Base triathlon.
The lane closures are:
>> Ala Moana Boulevard/Nimitz Highway: Two westbound left lanes closed from Atkinson Drive to Valkenburgh Street.
>> H-1 freeway: One westbound right lane closed from the Valkenburgh Street onramp to the Kaneohe/
Honolulu offramp (Exit 13B).
>> H-3 freeway: Closed in the Kaneohe-bound direction between the Halawa Interchange and the Marine Base.
Crews will be reopening the roadways as the last participant passes through. Electronic
message boards will be
displayed to inform motorists of the closures.
The DOT advises motorists to allow for extra travel time, use alternate routes and drive carefully through the race areas.
The race starts at
6:30 a.m. with a 1,000-meter swim at Ala Moana. Next comes a 27-mile bike ride from Ala Moana to the Kaneohe base.
The event ends with a 10-kilometer run around the base.
