A 52-year-old Kunia man has been charged with first-degree attempted murder after he allegedly wielded a weapon against several people and fired multiple times into a home.
Scott D. Vidinha was also charged with four counts of second-degree attempted murder and various firearm charges. His bail was set at $1 million.
At a news conference Monday, acting Assistant Police Chief Dagan Tsuchida said police were called to the area multiple times Saturday afternoon, but the situation initially was not at the level of arresting the suspect.
“The officers did what … they could within the boundaries of the law at that time,” Tsuchida said.
At about 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Vidinha allegedly used a firearm to threaten three adults, two teenagers and a 9-year-old boy at a townhouse subdivision in Kunia.
One resident, who declined to give his name and who lives in the same building as Vidinha and the victims, said he was watching football when he heard a couple of popping sounds similar to firecrackers. Moments later he heard a barrage of gunshots.
“All I heard was ‘pop, pop, pop, pop,’” the resident said as he stood in front of his building Monday morning.
A gunshot penetrated the front of the victims’ townhouse, right next to their front door.
The neighbor said the victims’ rear sliding door also was shattered by gunshots. “To shoot someone’s house is insane,” he said.
No injuries were reported.
The resident saw the firearm and described it as a “miniature M-16.”
Police arrested Vidinha on Saturday afternoon.
Tsuchida said five calls for help were made to 911 between 1 and 3:40 p.m. Saturday, including one about a man walking around naked.
