It’s farewell to the Hawaii ferry service that once served as a lifeline for Molokai residents who couldn’t find work on the island. After nearly three decades of Maui-Molokai runs, Sea Link of Hawaii Inc. is calling it quits on Friday, due to in part to federally subsidized air passenger service.
Two airlines — Mokulele and Makani Kai — now charge less per trip than Sea Link can for a ferry trip. When established in 1987, the Molokai Ferry was subsidized by the state to help residents commute to Maui for jobs after pineapple farming was phased out on Molokai. The state ended its subsidy 10 years ago.
This ferry’s demise shows — again — just how tough it is to keep our island state connected.
HPD crime map should map all crimes, violent or not
Honolulu Police Department officials said its “crime mapping” database came in response to the public desire for neighborhood crime stats, with most wanting tallies of property crimes.
So somebody at HPD decided that meant such run-of-the-mill crime counts was all they wanted. The online map eliminates the pins marking the locations for the entire class of violent crimes. So, they figured the burglary down the street interested the public, but not the murder?
You have to wonder what, or whether, they were thinking. Do like other cities and fix that, HPD.
