Police are looking for three suspects in connection with an early-morning robbery in the parking lot of Kahala Mall.
According to police, the three suspects, each wearing “Scream” masks, approached a parked vehicle containing four people — three men and a woman, ages 21 to 24 — brandished a firearm and demanded the victims’ money and property.
During the confrontation, the driver and passenger of the vehicle were assaulted. The suspects’ firearm was also discharged but no one was injured.
The suspects fled the scene and have not yet been located.
A similar incident occurred July 31 when a 61-year-old man told police that a vehicle drove in front of his car and blocked his path while he was stopped at a stop sign at Kahala Mall shortly after 10 p.m. He said one of two men in the vehicle got out, brandished a weapon and took a money bag from him.
Surfer is injured in shark attack on Maui
A Maui man was injured Friday afternoon after an encounter with a shark in waters off Hookipa Beach Park on Maui.
The victim was surfing when he was attacked by the shark. He suffered injuries to his left arm and left leg.
The incident was reported around 5 p.m.
Witnesses reported seeing a 5-foot-long shark, which appeared to be a reef shark.
Department of Land and Natural Resources officers cleared ocean users from Mama’s Fish House to Maliko Bay and posted warning signs along a 2-mile stretch of the area.
Officers will return to the beach today. The beach is expected to remained closed until noon, pending assessment.
Waianae man charged over threats, abuse
Police charged a 21-year-old Waianae man after he allegedly threatened a cashier with a knife at a Waipahu restaurant.
Isaiah T.K. Feliciano-Hoopai was charged with first-degree robbery, and his bail was set at $25,000. He was arraigned at District Court on Friday morning.
At about 6:15 a.m. Aug. 17, police said, Feliciano-Hoopai entered the Filipino Express Restaurant on Pupupani Street and threatened the cashier, 35, with a knife.
He took her property and fled in a black sport utility vehicle.
On Wednesday,officers of the District 8 Crime Reduction Unit located him in Waianae and arrested him.
Feliciano-Hoopai also was charged in a separate abuse case involving an 18-year-old woman that occurred Aug. 22.
Police said Feliciano-Hoopai and the victim were arguing when he allegedly attempted to strangle her.
He was charged with four counts of abuse of a household member. Bail for those charges was set at $8,000.
Feliciano-Hoopai has a criminal record that includes second-degree robbery, second-degree escape and criminal property damage.
Woman accused of stealing gun at OCCC
A 35-year-old woman was charged for allegedly stealing a firearm at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
Janelle Newcomb was charged Thursday.
She was a pretrial detainee who was released from OCCC on Oct. 13 after her case was dismissed in court.
Sometime after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Newcomb returned to prison to pick up her personal items when she allegedly stole a corrections officer’s .38-caliber revolver left unattended in a publicly accessible restroom at the main entrance, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
When the corrections officer returned to retrieved it, the firearm was gone. Sheriffs and police then searched for Newcomb.
Law enforcement arrested Newcomb at 7 p.m. Wednesday after they located her in Waikiki. Police recovered the missing gun. She was charged with first-degree theft and is being held in lieu of $11,000.
