A 22-year-old St. Louis Heights man died Tuesday afternoon after a moped collision near the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Police said two moped riders were traveling together heading Diamond Head on Dole Street.
The first overtook a van and stopped for a pedestrian crossing in a marked crosswalk.
The van also stopped, but the second moped rider did not see what was happening and ran into the first moped around 1:45 p.m., police said.
Both moped riders were ejected.
Paramedics took the second rider, who was not wearing a helmet, to the Queen’s Medical Center with critical head injuries, according to an Emergency Medical Services report, where he later died. The first rider received minor abrasions.
The accident occurred in the center lane near Donagho Road and the law school.
“I think that this is a really busy street,” UH-Manoa student Maili Martinez said. “Looks like the cars are going pretty fast. It doesn’t look like they’re going 25 mph.”
Honolulu police contra-flowed traffic at about 2:14 p.m., then closed Dole Street from University Avenue to East-West Road as traffic investigators examined the scene. The road was completely reopened by 4:12 p.m.
