On plenty of Division I basketball staffs, 41-year-old Adam Jacobsen would be the youngest assistant coach.
Not at Hawaii. “Coach Jake” is the oldest, including 35-year-old head coach Eran Ganot.
Jacobsen, the former 14-year Pacific staffer who’s taken on a mentor’s role for UH’s players and other coaches, was elevated by Ganot to associate head coach on Tuesday.
Jacobsen thanked Ganot and the university for the promotion. He was associate coach at Pacific his last two years before joining UH for its 28-6 season of 2015-16.
“For me it’s a little bit different, being the oldest member of our coaching staff here,” Jacobsen said with a laugh. “Being able to help other guys, we have a lot of great young coaches and even managers and people. Just being a person who can help those guys understand what it takes to do their job, but also to be there for them to help them in any way to be better.”
He’s also overseen the Rainbow Warriors’ offense — best in the Big West last year — and often takes the lead in scout preparation for opponents.
“We’re grateful for all that Adam does both on and off the court for our program,” Ganot said in a release. “He possesses the type of qualities that mean so much — he’s a great teacher of the game, he understands the profession, and he values mentorship. He leads a staff that I’m very fortunate to have.”
UH lists the men’s basketball salary range for assistants between $50,000 and $105,000 and associate coaches as $79,500-124,656
