One of Hawaii’s oldest golf championships is back on the island of Hawaii next month. The Mauna Lani Resort Hawaii State Open tees off Dec. 16-18 on the resort’s North and South courses.
Registration deadline is Nov. 25.
The tournament history dates back to the 1920s. It became a PGA Tour event in 1965 and was revived for local golfers a decade later, helping raise funds for Oahu Junior Golf.
A women’s division was started in 1976 and a senior championship began in 1989, with an A Flight added recently.
The Aloha Section took over the tournament in 1993, with its foundation overseeing it since 2006. It moved to Mauna Lani, site of the Senior Skins Golf Game for 11 years, in 2012.
PGA Tour champion Dean Wilson and former University of Hawaii-Hilo golfer Nick Mason have won four titles each since. Last year, Mason outlasted Parker McLachlin — who also won on the PGA Tour — with birdie on the fifth extra hole.
Britney Yada, about to play in the LPGA Q-School’s final stage, was the women’s champion. Kyle Suppa took low amateur honors and Pat McGinness A Flight. Jeff Coston (pro) and Clayton Amura (amateur) captured senior honors.
