HAWAII ISLAND
Fallen tree causes outage
Hawaiian Telcom customers around Kailua-Kona were without service for several hours Monday after a tree fell into a fiber-optic line in a remote area off Mamalahoa Highway.
The Hawaii island outage, from 11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., cut or limited landline, cellphone and internet service to parts of Kailua-Kona, Naalehu, Pahala and Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, including the police station in Kealakehe.
The break between Kalaoa and Waikoloa meant that some customers could not dial 911. Hawaii County Civil Defense recommended that anyone with an emergency go to the nearest fire station, police station, clinic or hospital.
MAUI
Manhole spews wastewater
About 1,560 gallons of wastewater spilled from a manhole in Lahaina on Monday, the Maui County Department of Environmental Management reported.
The spill occurred at the intersection of Lahainaluna Road and Kalena Street.
The wastewater went into a storm drain on Pauoa Street, and none of it reached the ocean, the county said. The overflow, the result of an unknown blockage in the main line, started at 7 a.m. and stopped at 8:15 a.m.
The spill site was cleared and disinfected, and the state Department of Health was notified, the county said.
