A moped rider was critically injured Sunday in a crash on South Beretania Street downtown.
The incident happened at about 2 p.m. near Fort Street Mall.
Police said one person was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition following the moped and vehicle collision.
Officers closed the two left lanes on South Beretania Street to investigate but reopened them just after 5 p.m.
About 30 firemen battle Waianae brush fire
Honolulu Fire Department personnel spent Sunday afternoon battling a brush fire in Waianae Valley.
The fire was reported at 12:10 p.m. HFD dispatched 11 units staffed by 27 firefighters.
The fire was located high upslope, requiring the department’s Air 1 helicopter to make multiple water drops, according to HFD spokesman Capt. Kevin Mokulehua.
As of 7:50 p.m. most of the HFD units were no longer required. No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is not yet known how many acres were involved.
Woman found sleeping in stolen car
A 48-year-old woman was charged Saturday after she was found sleeping in a stolen vehicle in the Nimitz area, police said.
The woman, of a Hilo address, was charged with second-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, and her bail was set at $1,000.
Police said the woman was seen sleeping in a 52-year-old woman’s vehicle near Zippy’s on North Nimitz Highway at about 1:15 a.m. Saturday. She was initially arrested as a habitual property crime offender and for investigation of an auto theft, but her case was later reclassified.
Man arrested in assault on driver
A 50-year-old man was charged after police said he assaulted another man sitting in a vehicle Friday in Kailua.
Samiuela Mataka Umufuke of Kailua was charged Saturday with first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. His bail was set at $15,000.
Police said Umufuke reached into a vehicle and assaulted a 28-year-old man, injuring him, at about 3:45 p.m.
Officers located Umufuke about an hour later on Keolu Drive in Enchanted Lake. Officers also arrested him on suspicion of four court violations and driving without a license.
Wahiawa man charged with forgery
A 48-year-old Wahiawa man has been charged with felony forgery after he returned to the crime scene at an Ala Moana bank, police said.
Steve Jobe was charged Friday with second-degree forgery, and his bail was set at $20,000.
Police said Jobe handed over a forged document at an undisclosed bank Nov. 3, and employees didn’t discover the forgery until after he left.
Officers arrested Jobe on Wednesday after he returned to the bank and employees called police. He was arrested at the Ala Moana Building, 1441 Kapiolani Blvd., at 5:15 p.m.
