A 32-year-old Hauula man who died in a traffic accident on Kamehameha Highway in Waiahole on Saturday night was identified as Onipaa Paaaina.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner Office identified Paaaina on Sunday morning.
Paaaina was driving a pickup truck that struck a sedan at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday near the intersection with Waiahole Homestead Road, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.
Paaaina was traveling northbound on Kamehameha Highway when he lost control of his vehicle and traveled into the southbound lane and collided with a sedan, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the sedan, a 39-year-old woman from California, was in stable condition with no apparent major injuries. She was wearing a seat belt, EMS said.
Paramedics also treated a 39-year-old woman and 46-year-old man, passengers in the sedan, and took them in serious condition to the hospital. The woman had apparent abdominal and lower back injuries and chest pain. She was in the passenger seat and was wearing a seat belt. The man was wearing a seat belt in the back seat and was treated for pain in the lower left side.
Police shut down Kamehameha Highway in both directions while they investigated the crash.
Drugs appear to be a contributing factor, police said, but it’s unknown whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
This was Oahu’s 46th traffic fatality this year compared with 43 at the same time last year.
No one injured in fire on Hawaii island
A single-story house burned down late Saturday and early Sunday in Keauhou on Hawaii island.
The Hawaii County Fire Department reported that the first crews got to the scene at 10:23 p.m. Saturday and found the wooden house fully engulfed in flames.
The fire was extinguished at 12:20 a.m. Sunday but not before the roof collapsed, the county said by email.
The one person at home was able to leave unharmed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
