Authorities are asking for help locating an inmate who fled from Laumaka Furlough Center in Kalihi on Monday.
The state Department of Public Safety said Michael Jay, 37, is serving time for first-degree attempted assault and first-degree criminal property damage.
A judge had sentenced him to six years and eight months for the charges. Prior to his escape, the Public Safety Department said, the parole board tentatively approved Jay to be released Dec. 13. According to a news release, Jay returned to Laumaka at 9 p.m. Monday after he was issued a furlough day pass. Jay was told to wait in a holding room to meet with staff when he fled out the front door.
Jay is 5 feet 7 inches tall, approximately 124 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. He has several tattoos around his neck. The Public Safety Department said he was wearing a white hoodie and white cargo shorts when he fled. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or the Sheriff’s Office at 586-1352.
Maui pedestrian dies from accident injuries
A 64-year-old pedestrian died Monday of injuries from an accident earlier this month in Kahului.
He has been identified as Thomas James Partyka of Kula, Maui, according to the Maui Fire Department.
Partyka was in a marked crosswalk shortly before 5 p.m. Nov. 5 when struck by a white 2010 Hyundai Sante Fe multipurpose vehicle traveling east on the airport access road at the intersection with Hana Highway. Partyka was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition. Police said the Hyundai driver did not suffer any injuries.
Police reported Tuesday that Partyka succumbed to his injuries and died Monday in Maui Memorial’s intensive care unit.
39 fugitives nabbed on Kauai in 4 days
Law enforcement officers arrested 39 fugitives on Kauai during a four-day operation Nov. 14 to Thursday by the U.S. Marshals Task Force and Kauai Police Department targeting fugitives wanted in connection with homicide, robbery, narcotics offenses and other crimes.
Firearms, narcotics and cash related to criminal acts were seized and turned over to Kauai police for investigation.
One fugitive, Jon-Anthony Paul Vidinha, 40, was arrested on outstanding warrants totaling $100,000. Authorities seized his backpack that they said contained two handguns, about $3,800 in cash and 30 grams of crystal methamphetamine.
