Kauai crash injures teen, closes highway
A single-vehicle crash Saturday morning in Hana- maulu, Kauai, closed Kuhio Highway in both directions near the Kapaia Road junction.
At about 7 a.m. a white Isuzu freight truck was traveling on the highway when it apparently crossed the center line and veered off the roadway. The truck then crashed into a guardrail and utility pole.
The driver, 17, of Lihue sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Wilcox Medical Center.
The truck was severely damaged and had to be towed from the scene. The crash severed the utility pole at its base, which had to be replaced by a crew from the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative.
Both lanes of Kuhio Highway were closed from about 7:20 a.m. to 2 p.m., at which time the eastbound lane was opened to contraflow traffic.
