A high-surf advisory remains in effect until about 6 p.m. today for the east-facing shores of the main Hawaiian Islands.
Dangerous surf of 6 to 10 feet is expected, the National Weather Service said, warning that strong currents will make swimming “difficult and dangerous.”
Also through 6 p.m., a small-craft advisory is in effect for Hawaii waters, except those to the southwest of Oahu and Kauai. East winds of 17 to 29 mph will accompany seas of 7 to 12 feet.
Meanwhile, breezy tradewinds will bring some showers to windward and mountain areas through Tuesday, forecasters said. Showers will increase late Tuesday as an upper low moves over the area.
HAWAII ISLAND
19 displaced by Ocean View fire
Nineteen people were displaced Saturday after fire destroyed an unpermitted structure in Ocean View, Hawaii island firefighters said.
Firefighters responded at about 3:35 p.m. to 92-8730 Lehua Lane and found the single-story structure engulfed in flames. All the occupants had already evacuated to a neighboring property.
Ten firefighters brought the fire under control by 4 p.m., but the 1,800-square-foot structure was a total loss.
Firefighters said multiple families lived in the dwelling.
The cause was undetermined.
MAUI
3 assisted in boating incident
Maui firefighters and ocean safety personnel assisted a group of boaters after the vessel they were riding in ran aground on Keawakapu Beach on Saturday afternoon.
The party — three men and two women — was returning to the Kihei boat ramp after snorkeling when the boat ran out of gas, Maui County said by email Sunday. Despite dropping anchor, the boat was dragged by strong wind and current onto the beach.
A bystander drove the boat’s owner to get a fuel can and gasoline while the other occupants tried to keep the boat from washing further onto the sand.
Firefighters and bystanders helped to free the boat, and a lifeguard rescue watercraft towed it to deeper water.
The owner of the boat, a Kihei resident, got his engine started again and continued to the Kihei boat ramp without further incident.
No injuries were reported.
