The 32nd annual Honolulu City Lights celebration kicks off with a Christmas parade and tree-lighting ceremony Saturday evening.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell will lead the lighting of the 55-foot tree in front of Honolulu Hale at 6 p.m. University of Hawaii football coach Nick Rolovich and students with the Daniel K. Inouye Elementary School will help, and the Kamehameha Elementary School Children’s Choir will perform.
Also at 6 p.m., the Public Workers’ Electric Light Parade featuring more than 50 decorated city vehicles, floats (both city and private), school marching bands and other units will begin its march to city hall starting at Aala Park. It will head down King Street, pass city hall and end at Kawaiahao Street.
A holiday concert presented by Tom Moffatt Productions and Summit Media begins at 7:30 near the Sky Gate sculpture. It will feature Halau Hula Olana, Blayne Asing, Mailani Makainai and Sean Na‘auao.
The Honolulu Hale courtyard’s annual display of trees and wreaths will be open until 11 p.m. Santa Claus will take pictures with keiki in the Mission Memorial Auditorium on the Diamond Head side of city hall.
Free parking will be available at the city municipal lot with entry from the left lane of South Beretania Street just past Alapai Street.
The night’s activities will be broadcast live 6 to 10 p.m. on Oceanic’s ‘Olelo Channel 49.
Because the parade and ceremony will require street and lane closures, and disrupt traffic in the area, motorists are advised to use alternate routes or allow for extra travel time.
