A 19-year-old man died after he lost control of the moped he was driving and crashed into a guardrail Saturday night in Kalihi, police said.
The accident happened at about 9:20 p.m. on Kalihi Street near School Street.
According to police, the Kalihi man was traveling south on Kalihi Street when he lost control and flew onto the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Excessive speed appears to be a factor, and drugs may be a contributing factor, police said.
This was Oahu’s 51st traffic fatality this year, compared with 44 at the same time last year.
Man found floating in sea sent to hospital
A 46-year-old man was taken in critical condition to a hospital Sunday after being found floating unresponsive in the water off Mokuleia, according to Emergency Medical Serv-ices.
Bystanders noticed the man in the water fronting Crozier Loop at about 4 p.m. One of them brought him to shore and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until first responders arrived.
Emergency Medical Services gave the man advanced life support before transporting him to an area hospital.
Sick skipper flown to Oahu for treatment
The Coast Guard brought a 36-year-old man from a fishing vessel to the Queen’s Medical Center on Saturday morning.
The man, the captain of the 70-foot Lady J3, was taken to the hospital for swelling to his legs and inability to stand.
The Coast Guard got the request for a medevac Friday morning from a National Marine Fisheries Service observer aboard the boat, then 176 miles north of Kauai and heading to Oahu. By Friday evening the man had developed breathing problems as well.
A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Barbers Point reached the fishing boat Saturday morning, 41 miles north of Oahu.
Empty boat spurs search for pair in ocean
The Coast Guard was searching off Hawaii island Sunday for two possible persons in the water off North Kohala after an empty Zodiac boat was found adrift.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Barbers Point and the cutter Ahi were launched to search the area, 5 miles north of Kawaihae Harbor.
The Hawaii County Fire Department called the Coast Guard on Sunday morning after a mariner found a 12-foot Zodiac dinghy adrift offshore. Campers reported seeing a man and a woman using a dinghy like the one found.
The dinghy had two fishing rods, a tackle box and fresh fish in the cooler aboard. The owner of the Zodiac is thought to be Derek Liu, whose green Nissan truck is still at the campsite.
Anyone with information that might help locate the owners of the dinghy is asked to contact the Honolulu command center at 842-2600.
