It’s been a rough recent months for Oahu eaters.
First came an outbreak of hepatitis A — in one case, fatal — due to tainted scallops consumed at a popular sushi chain; the restaurants have since been sanitized and reopened. Then last month, illnesses due to salmonella infection halted production at a Kahuku seaweed farm; lab tests found the salmonella bacteria in packing and processing tanks.
The equipment has since been upgraded and operations resumed for Kahuku Ogo, Robusta Ogo and Kahuku Sea Asparagus. That surely brings a huge sigh of relief to the farm — and to the many fans of poke, since the salmonella cases were linked to raw fish and seaweed (limu) from that farm.
Limiting visitors to the House of the Sun
Even with four sunrise-viewing areas and a total of 150 parking spaces, early mornings can be overcrowded affairs in Haleakala’s summit district. In response to concerns about safety and protection of natural and cultural resources, the National Park Service will require motorists winding through the district between 3 and 7 a.m. to hold reservations, starting Feb. 1.
The pilot program for Maui’s highest peak seems necessary, and could improve upon the amazing bird’s-eye view of the sun rising through clouds.
