Megan Anderson had 10 points and Bre’yanna Sanders added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals as Clovis West (Calif.) outlasted Maryknoll 67-58 in the opening round of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic.
Clovis West, ranked No. 9 nationally by USA Today, got a big spark in the third quarter to turn a five-point halftime lead into a 16-point margin.
The 30-second shot clock was no problem for the Golden Eagles, who play with the shot clock in the CIF. They hit 18 treys to win their Nike Central Valley Showdown title game last week. They were 8-for-18 against Maryknoll’s man defense.
“We were a little bit tight, passing up shots early,” coach Craig Campbell said.
“I like the way we finished, especially our second unit,” Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said.
Anderson was key with two blocks, three points and a dish during the pivotal 21-10 run. Maryknoll, ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10, was within 38-33 on a long-distance shot by Chayse Milne as both teams exchanged 3-point bombs.
With forward Kamalu Kamakawiwo‘ole (ankle) out since the second quarter, Maryknoll struggled to keep up with the constant fullcourt and halfcourt pressure of the taller, longer Golden Eagles. Ava Emerzian hit two foul shots, Sarah Bates drove for a layup and Chimney Pullman drilled a corner 3 to open the lead to 48-35.
Ysabelle Halemano’s runner cut the advantage to 11, but Sanders hustled for a layup and Anderson took a solid hit to the head for a traditional three-point play at the rim. That lifted Clovis West’s lead to 53-37 after three quarters.
The Lady Spartans tried to stay within striking distance, but Sanders hustled for a follow shot and Anderson sank a free throw as the Golden Eagles took their biggest lead, 63-42, with 4:11 remaining.
Long Beach Poly 81, Leilehua 31
Ayanna Clark scored 14 points and Aiyana Barnes added 10 to spark the Jackrabbits, ranked No. 14 in the nation. Deja Williams and Danae Miller chipped in nine points each.
Kaylen Kamelamela led the Lady Mules with eight points.
‘Iolani 57, Salesian (Calif.) 45
Camy Aguinaldo poured in 16 points, including three treys, as the host Raiders pulled away in the third quarter. Skylar Nakata sank four 3-pointers for 12 points.
Jakayla Edwards led Salesian with 13 points and Angel Jackson added 11. The Pride erased a seven-point halftime deficit, but the Raiders went on a 13-4 run to end the third quarter for a 38-29 lead.
Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) 79, Konawaena 39
Haley Jones scored 20 points in a versatile, dominant performance for the nation’s No. 2-ranked team. Daniella Guglielmo added eight points as coach Susan Phillips substituted freely throughout. Jones and most of the starters played in and out through the final quarter, using a stingy defense to force the Wildcats into more turnovers than field goals.
ILH DIVISION II GIRLS
Le Jardin 52, Hawaiian Mission 26
Julia Fisher scored a team-high 18 points, while Mia Barret added 13 as the Bulldogs beat the Knights.
For Hawaiian Mission, Dannica Roberts poured in a game-high 20 points.
Damien 57, La Pietra 23
The Monarchs outscored the Panthers 35-12 in the first half and never looked back en route to a league victory.
OIA WEST GIRLS
Nanakuli 56, Waialua 15
Kahani Diamond scored 18 points, and Kalei Cates added 16, as the Golden Hawks breezed past the Bulldogs in the season opener for both teams.
Kaitlin Ayanon had six points for Waialua.
Campbell 65, Pearl City 11
Gieani Balino led all scorers with 27 points as the Sabers routed the Chargers.

Kaimuki 47, McKinley 38
Victoria Kintz poured in a game-high 20 points, leading the Bulldogs past the Tigers.
