Bell ringing honors lost Navy submarines, crews

    World War II veterans Ray Chavez, 104, left, and retired Rear Adm. Joe Vasey, 99, shook hands after ringing America’s Freedom Bell on Saturday at the USS Bowfin memorial in Pearl Harbor during a ceremony commemorating the 52 submarines lost during World War II. The bell was cast in bronze with steel from the twin towers in New York that were destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001.

Submarines are known as the Navy’s “Silent Service,” but their contributions to World War II were honored by loud clanging Saturday during a moving tolling of a bell at Bowfin Park. Read more
