Kaulana Makaula scored 17 points as No. 1 Punahou overwhelmed No. 4 Kalaheo 74-37 on Saturday in the OIA-ILH Challenge at Moanalua.
The Mustangs played without their two leading scorers, Captain Whitlock and Noah Woodby. The two are also Kalaheo’s best ballhandlers, and were missed dearly against Punahou’s relentless fullcourt press.
Andreas Jankovic, Kalaheo’s 6-foot-9 center, scored the first bucket of the game on a layup, but Punahou forced three turnovers in a row and never trailed again.
Ke‘ala Martinson hustled for 12 points — six in the first quarter and six in the third — and Chris Kobayashi added 10 for Punahou (7-0).
Ryan Pardini led Kalaheo (3-4) with 10 points.
“It’s still a process,” Buffanblu coach Darren Matsuda said. “No matter what the score is, we have to execute our press, our (halfcourt) defense and offense, no matter who’s in the game.”
With a healthy Whitlock (groin) and Woodby, it would likely have been a different game. Whitlock scored 40 points last week in a 60-55 win over Saint Louis.
“They’re very steady. Woodby is very fast,” Matsuda said.
The run-and-gun Buffanblu got plenty of playing time for reserves. Starting center Duke Clemens (6-4) showed flashes of excellence with a low-post jump hook and a lefty layup on the fastbreak. Beau Whittaker (6-3), who played on the D-II team last year, and 6-8 sophomore Falcon Kaumatule got a lot of minutes.
“We kind of want to go through the low post,” Matsuda said.
Kapolei 57, Mid-Pacific 52
Hezekiah Del Prado scored 11 points, and Ja’Shon Carter and Zoar Nedd added 10 each as the Hurricanes gave the Owls their first loss in the tournament.
Jacen Kimura scored 13 points, and Kamana Lapina and Nalu Coito added 11 each for the Owls.
Kapolei, which lost to Punahou 81-72 on Friday, went 1-2 in the tourney.
No. 2 ‘Iolani 62, Leilehua 36
Senior center Hugh Hogland scored 10 points and blocked seven shots as the Raiders finished the tourney with a 3-0 mark. Sam Wheeler came off the bench and hit three treys in the third quarter to finish with nine points.
Tashaun Wright led the Mules with eight points. Sharpshooter Liam Fitzgerald did not play.
No. 3 Kamehameha 43, Moanalua 41
Kamren Victorino-Kato scored 18 points to lead the Warriors to their first win in tourney play. Caleb Casinas led Moanalua with 15 points, but missed a layup with four seconds left that would have tied the game. RJ Dominguez added 11 points for Na Menehune.
Kamehameha shot 17-for-23 from the free-throw line (74 percent). Moanalua shot 6-for-14 (43 percent).
