A 37-year-old Waimanalo man accused of going on a crime spree in Kahala last week is scheduled to appear in Honolulu District Court today for three home burglaries, a robbery and an attempted carjacking.
A preliminary hearing will be held for Ivan S. Kong Jr., who is charged with three counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree robbery, unauthorized entry into a dwelling, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and first-degree terroristic threatening.
He is in custody on $250,000 bail.
Kong’s alleged crime spree began Dec. 7 at about 11:40 a.m. Police said a resident arrived at her Kahala Avenue home and found a man believed to be Kong, who told her he was an air conditioner repairman. The resident saw signs her home had been broken into and confronted the man, who then allegedly assaulted her before he fled on a stolen motorcycle.
Kong then allegedly broke into a home on Makaiwa Street and attempted to steal a bicycle. A resident at a third home nearby found her garage door open when she arrived to check her residence after her home alarm was activated, a court document said. She told police she saw Kong flee from her home with a bicycle.
A motorist who was slowly driving behind a moving truck on Makaiwa Street said Kong abruptly opened his car door and jumped inside the vehicle on top of him in the driver’s seat. Police said Kong tried to take control of the vehicle and grabbed the steering wheel.
KHON-2 reported that a good Samaritan intervened and repeatedly punched Kong in the face and detained him until police arrived on Makaiwa Street.
Police said he resisted arrest and attempted to flee.
Kong was convicted in 2011 and sentenced to five years in prison for three house burglaries and a motor vehicle theft.
