A 22-year-old woman died Wednesday after plunging 200 feet off Puu Manamana Trail in Kaaawa, Honolulu firefighters said.
Firefighters dispatched at about 4:50 p.m. after a hiking party of three lost contact with one of its members on the trail also known as Crouching Lion, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins.
Firefighters searched by helicopter along the cliff face and found the woman at 5:25 p.m. She had fallen about 200 feet.
They rappelled down to find her unconscious with no pulse and not breathing, Jenkins said. Firefighters flew her to Swanzy Beach Park, where Emergency Medical Services personnel pronounced her dead.
Copper wire discovered in homeless camp
State law enforcement officers have seized a substantial amount of stripped copper wire from a homeless encampment at Keehi Lagoon.
Officers from the state Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement found the wire at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday while canvassing the area after observing a man and and woman in the Sand Island State Recreation Area, apparently in possession of stripped copper wire.
The man ran away and the woman left in a vehicle. Both were stopped. She was cited for various traffic offenses, then released; he was released pending further investigation.
Department of Land and Natural Resources spokeswoman Deborah Ward said investigators are not disclosing the amount seized pending further investigation, including a determination of who owned the wire.
