Hawaii came in at No. 17 in the final AVCA Coaches Top 25 released on Monday.
The Rainbow Wahine (23-6) were at No. 12 heading into the NCAA tournament, where they lost to then-top-ranked Minnesota in the second round. Hawaii, ranked seventh in 2015’s final poll, was preseason No. 6.
National champion Stanford (27-7) received all 64 first-place votes. National runner-up Texas (27-5) was second, followed by Minnesota (29-5) and Nebraska (31-3).
Orr leads undefeated HPU men
Chauncey Orr scored a career-high 31 points and Hawaii Pacific remained undefeated with a 91-67 victory over Northern New Mexico in a nonconference men’s basketball game played Monday afternoon at Moanalua High gym.
Orr was 13-for-18 from the field, including 4-for-7 from 3-point range, for the Sharks (11-0). Bryce Simmons came off the bench for a team-high 15 points for the Eagles (2-12).
>> Kiran Shastri scored a career-high 36 points, hitting 10 3-pointers, as Chaminade (7-5, 4-2) pulled away for an 88-75 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii (3-9, 1-5) in a PacWest men’s basketball game at Cannon Activities Center.
Shastri was 10-for-16 from 3-point range, finishing 12-for-19 from the field. Caeleb Roney had 20 points and Tanner Nelson 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Seasiders.
>> Brian Ishola scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Hawaii Hilo (4-6, 3-2) to a 78-41 victory over Dominican (3-8, 2-3) at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Seasiders women turn back Silverswords
Safia Sheikh scored 22 points and Brigham Young-Hawaii used a 6-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to defeat Chaminade 62-55 in a PacWest women’s basketball game at Cannon Activities Center.
Kristin Baldwin added 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Marina Sheikh 10 points for the Seasiders (6-5, 2-3). Courtney Kaupu had 13 points and Kristle Henry 10 for the Silverswords (1-8, 1-5).
