For those planning a visit to Pearl Harbor Tuesday, be prepared: History-in-the-making just might cause a wrinkle in that plan.
President Barack Obama and Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are scheduled to make a historic visit to the solemn site that day, so the USS Arizona Memorial and Pearl Harbor Visitor Center will be closed, as well as the neighboring USS Bowfin Submarine Museum.
Remaining open to visitors will be the Pacific Aviation Museum (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as usual) and Battleship Missouri Memorial (1 to 5 p.m.) — though those Ford Island sites will be accessible only via shuttles from Aloha Stadium. Look for signage to guide visitors and motorists.
Honolulu police need a few good recruits
No doubt there’s been a rough patch lately for police departments, with Honolulu’s chief and several others under federal scrutiny locally, and violent flare-ups nationally. For the most part, though, the 2,000-plus officers of the Honolulu Police Department have been a credit to the force.
Now comes an opportunity to join those noble ranks: HPD is looking for recruits 20 years or older, with a high school diploma or GED, to fill 174 vacancies within the force. The deadline to apply is Thursday (see joinhonolulupd.org).
