Residents are reminded that state officials will conduct the monthly emergency siren test today.
The Emergency Alert System test of the outdoor warning sirens are usually done on the first working day of the month, but the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency delayed it due to the New Year’s holiday. This month’s test will be at 11:45 a.m.
The test of the statewide outdoor siren warning system is coordinated with the test of the live audio broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System, in cooperation with local broadcasters.
Anyone wishing to report a malfunctioning siren can call civil defense and emergency management agency officials at the following numbers: Hawaii island, 935-0031; Maui County, 270-7285; Honolulu, 723-8960; and Kauai, 241-1800.

State to make improvements to the Garden Isle’s airport
LIHUE >> The Hawaii Department of Transportation has announced plans to complete $18 million worth of improvements and upgrades at Lihue Airport.
Funds for the improvements to the airport’s hold room, passenger check-in area and ticket lobby are part of the state’s executive $28.8 billion budget for fiscal years 2017-19. Taxpayers will pay $10 million for rehabilitation work of the airfield, the Garden Island newspaper reported.
State officials say the improvements will reduce congestion at the state’s fourth-busiest airport and improve the passenger experience.
“HDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable intermodal transportation system to ensure the mobility of people and goods and to enhance the quality of life throughout the state,” said spokeswoman Shelly Kunishige.
The ticket lobby and hold room improvements are expected to be complete by the end of 2018, with the remaining construction work scheduled for completion by 2019.
The Lihue Airport served 2.8 million passengers in fiscal year 2016.
“Construction work will be done in off peak times to accommodate travelers,” Kunishige said.
