Wherever there was a leak, Moli Heimuli was there to fix it.
The 5-foot-11 senior poured in 35 points and corralled 26 rebounds as Farrington pulled away for a 60-45 win over Kalani in OIA East girls basketball action at Kitamura Gymnasium.
Kaylie Espinas led Kalani (5-2) with 13 points. Logan Luke added 13 and Kirstin Kouchi finished with 10.
Coming off a big win at Kahuku, Farrington now has a five-game win streak and improved to 7-1 in league play. The win over Kalani, a powerhouse in the East despite its Division II designation, was closer than the final score may indicate. Kalani rallied from a 15-point deficit to tie the game in the third quarter.
“That’s been our season, real inconsistent,” Falcons coach Chi Mok said. “We get content and lose energy.”
The Governors rolled to a 35-20 lead late in the first half as Heimuli drove and hustled her way to 23 points, often handling the ball in the middle of their press breaker.
“She is very skilled and can shoot from the free-throw line and in,” Mok said. “I’m glad we don’t have to play her anymore. She’s a monster.”
Kalani didn’t back off, though, scoring the final five points of the first half, including a 3 by Kouchi. After Kouchi opened the second half with another 3, teammate Noelle Suzuki stole a pass in the backcourt and fed Kouchi, who rained in another trey, and suddenly the 15-point lead was down to 35-31. Govs coach Caroline Tatupu called time out with 7:30 left in the third quarter.
“We had to stop the bleeding. We knew (Kouchi) was dangerous,” she said. “We keyed on her.”
Farrington’s 2-3 matchup zone extended to the perimeter constantly and did the job. Kalani cooled off, but stayed close thanks to a sticky full-court press. The Lady Falcons shot just 6-for-23 from 3-point range (26 percent), but forced 19 Farrington turnovers, including 10 in the second half.
Kalani continued to rally and tied the game at 37 on two free throws by Candice Woods with 4:21 left in the third quarter. From there, it was Farrington’s night, thanks to Heimuli, who played the entire second half.
“I knew I had to suck it up. When I’m in the game, everything’s on me,” she said. “When I’m sitting, it’s good to watch what my teammates got, too.”
She scored on a layup, then ran the break and fed Violet Williams for a layup as Farrington opened a 43-38 lead entering the fourth quarter. She hustled for a putback, Channy Mailou delivered a pass to Shaniah Paleafei for another layup, and then Heimuli had the pass of the night. She grabbed a rebound, pushed to near midcourt, and then led teammate Shayla Cabato-Machado with a textbook bounce pass in stride for a layup.
Heimuli also had three blocks and three assists to complete a fantastic night.
The Govs outrebounded the much smaller Falcons 51-18, which included 13 offensive boards.
