A 36-year-old licensed certified nurse’s aide pleaded no contest to a charge related to slapping a 93-year-old dementia patient.
The state Attorney General announced Wednesday that Courtney Young, a Honolulu resident employed with Beckwith Hillside Care Home, pleaded no contest Wednesday to endangering the welfare of an incompetent person.
The 93-year-old woman lived in the care home, which is owned by Young’s mother, the attorney general said in a news release. Another certified nurse’s aide saw her slap the patient at the care home and went to assist.
The patient suffers from dementia and is wheelchair-bound.
“This case involved the abuse of someone who was incredibly vulnerable,” said Attorney General Doug Chin. “This type of egregious behavior will be prosecuted swiftly by my office’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.”
Young faces up to one year in prison for the misdemeanor offense.
Despite the state’s objection, Honolulu District Court Judge Naunanikinau Kamalii granted Young a deferral and ordered her to pay the maximum $2,000 fine.
The deputy attorney general handling the case asked the court for a one-year ban on patient care. Instead the court sentenced her to a 30-day ban.
