A total of nine lost hikers were rescued Tuesday night at Maunawili Falls Trail and Waimano Trail.
The Honolulu Fire Department responded to a call for help at about 7:15 p.m. for two hikers in their 20s who had been on the trail for about two hours when they got lost at Maunawili Falls. They were located about 9:41 p.m. and escorted out. No injuries were reported.
At Waimano Home Trail, the fire department rescued five hikers at about 7:30 p.m. Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. Kevin Mokulehua said they had been on the trail for about four hours when they got lost.
In the search, firefighters came across two other lost hikers and escorted them back to the trailhead. The five hikers weren’t found until about three hours later. There were no injuries.
HFD is recommending that hikers start early in the day. “We don’t recommend anyone starting their hikes late,” Mokulehua said. “It’s very difficult to find your (way) back, especially at night.”
Mokulehua also advised hikers to not stray from designated trails to reduce the risk of getting lost or injured. He urged hikers to carry a charged cellphone, a flashlight and a whistle in case of an emergency.
