With all their starters back to full health, No. 9 Kalaheo was ready to shock the visiting, top-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders on Friday night.
Instead, it was Big Red that crashed the party, opening the game with a 10-0 run en route to an 81-60 win over the Mustangs in a big Oahu Interscholastic Association East clash on Pete Smith Court.
Samuta Avea was a force on the boards, in transition, and on offense with 12 first-half points. The 6-foot-6 Hawaii commit finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists as Kahuku played fast, aggressive and unselfish basketball from start to finish.
Point guard Jessiya Villa finished with 22 points and six assists, Dan Fotu tallied 20 points, four boards and three blocks, and center Taimona Wright shot 5-for-6 and had 14 points as Kahuku improved to 5-0 in league play. Kalaheo slipped to 3-2.
“We came out on fire. You walk in and see all the championship banners. There’s a reason why they’ve been successful. This is a tough gym to play in,” Kahuku coach Brandyn Akana said.
Kahuku shot 55 percent from the field (34-for-62) against Kalaheo’s mix of man and zone defenses. The Red Raiders were also 83 percent from the free-throw line (10-for-12) and committed just eight turnovers in a superlative performance.
“I played with a lot of these guys and Coach Rob (Pardini) during the summer (two years ago),” Avea said. “They’re great competition and a great team.”
Defense was the constant for Kahuku, even on a hot-shooting night. Kesi Ah-Hoy scrambled for five rebounds and teamed with Codie Sauvao to smother Kalaheo’s top scorers. Sauvao blanketed Kalaheo standout Captain Whitlock, who finished with 17 points, 11 in the second half. Whitlock missed a large chunk of preseason with a hip flexor, and teammate Noah Woodby (ankle) also looked back in form, finishing with 15 points.
“We go back to practice,” said Whitlock, who had two rebounds. “The first three minutes of the game (by Kahuku) caught us off guard.”
Kalaheo finished with a decent shooting percentage (45 percent) from the field, but was just 11-for-28 in the first half and was outrebounded 15-9 by the break.
“Our energy wasn’t there,” junior forward Andrew Kearney said. “We need to come out stronger.”
Kahuku’s fast break was in full flow, and the mix of fullcourt and halfcourt pressure was a major factor. The visitors opened the lead to 40-22 after Avea’s tough three-point play in the paint and two foul shots by Villa midway through the third quarter.
Kalaheo managed to chip away and got within 59-48 after Whitlock hit a string of tough pull-up jumpers in the lane late in the third quarter. Kahuku opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run behind Fotu’s power in the low post and a three-point drive by Villa, and never looked back.
