Sirena Titer connected on four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points as Kaimuki outlasted Kahuku 47-39 on Wednesday night at Thomas Walker Gymnasium.
A boisterous senior-night crowd at Kahuku’s home court saw Kaimuki improve to 8-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East. The Bulldogs used a long-range attack to overcome the bigger Lady Raiders. Sonia Palik had 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists, sinking three of Kaimuki’s 10 treys. Senior Victoria Kintz added 10 points and two steals, directing the Bulldogs’ fourth-quarter spread offense. Sophomore Kaelyn Espinda added eight points and four boards.
Kaimuki shot 10-for-24 from deep (42 percent) despite a cold second quarter. They shot just 1-for-6 from the arc as Kahuku rallied from a five-point deficit to take a 22-21 lead into halftime.
“We can’t stop shooting. That’s our bread and butter,” Kaimuki coach Mona Fa‘asoa said. “Kahuku is big and strong, and their guards can hit the open shot, and they’re all lengthy.”
Titer, a 5-foot-1 junior, was everywhere. She had three dimes and three steals.
“Sirena was all over creation. I think that was her best game,” Fa‘asoa aded.
Kahuku’s first-year head coach, Latoya Wily, wasn’t surprised by Kaimuki’s sheer hustle.
“Coach Mona is always someone I’ve looked up to. You play for Coach Mona, you’re going to play hard,” Wily said.
Kahuku, which outrebounded Kaimuki 28-19, got 11 points and six rebounds from center Britain Blake. Logo Galeai added nine points and five caroms, and Savanna Christensen tallied eight points, five boards and three blocks. Point guard Lehiwa Benson had five assists and four rebounds to go with five points.
There were seven lead changes in the first half as the teams worked patiently against each other’s 2-3 matchup zones. After Titer sank a 3 to open the second half, Kaimuki never trailed again. The game was tied at 21 late in the third quarter after a post move by Blake.
Kaimuki, which began to be more deliberate in the third, got a steal and foul shot by Titer and a running, bank shot from 24 feet out at the buzzer by Kintz.
In the fourth, the run continued as Titer and Palik, a sophomore, took turns hitting open 3s. They combined for three trifectas in a row to open the lead to 41-28. From there, Fa‘asoa ordered her team to spread the floor and kill the final five minutes of regulation. Kahuku got no closer than 11 the rest of the way.
