A 49-year-old man was being held by Honolulu police Saturday after he allegedly fired a shotgun at a police car in a residential area of Kahaluu.
The incident, which occurred sometime between 3:50 and 4 p.m., left the police car with several holes on the left passenger side. There were no injuries.
The motive for the shooting was unclear.
Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions between Hunaahi and Hunalepo streets at about 4 p.m. Traffic was rerouted to Hunaahi Street and then onto Hunalepo.
The highway reopened after 7 p.m.
The shooting came a day after police fatally shot a man who police said hit an officer with a stolen truck at Malaekahana State Recreation Area.
3 people rescued after boat capsizes
A 16-foot boat capsized Saturday in heavy surf off Waikiki, but lifeguards rescued all three aboard.
The Boston Whaler, with a male and two females aboard, overturned at the surf spot Publics at about 3:20 p.m.
Honolulu lifeguards, the Coast Guard and the Honolulu Fire Department responded to the incident.
A good Samaritan had reported taking on some passengers of the overturned boat. No injuries were immediately reported.
Ocean Safety lifeguards used their rescue watercraft to tow the boat, which lost power, to the Ala Wai Boat Harbor.
On the North Shore, meanwhile, thousands of people turned out to watch the big surf. As of 4:30 p.m., lifeguards had made six rescues, said Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright. North Shore surf was 14 to 18 feet, according to the department.
Suspect is sought in Nuuanu robbery
Police were looking for a male suspect after a robbery at a Nuuanu business.
The suspect brandished a weapon after entering the business at about 6:40 a.m. Friday and demanded property, police said.
He took an undisclosed amount of cash from a 56-year-old woman and fled. He remained at large Saturday.
Police opened a first-degree robbery investigation.
Mountain biker hospitalized after 25-foot fall
A 37-year-old man was in serious condition Saturday after falling about 25 feet while mountain biking at Maunawili Park.
The man was wearing a helmet when he fell off the trail at about 11:20 a.m., an Emergency Medical Services report said.
He was taken by helicopter to awaiting paramedics, who treated him and took him to a hospital.
Hilo resident charged in October burglary
A Hawaii island man has been charged with burglary in a break-in on Kapaka Street in Hilo.
Kai Inman, 40, of Hilo was charged with first-degree burglary. His bail was set at $25,000.
The burglary took place on Oct. 27, and Inman was charged Wednesday by Hawaii police following an investigation, police said.
